New Members

To mark their joining as new members of the Jerusalem Artists Association, Sara Beninga, Yael Bavor-man-Atass, and Noga Greenberg present new creative chapters in painting, drawing, and photography.
Sara Beninga presents a series of paintings from the past year, in which dramatic and enigmatic human occurrences unfold. The scale, space, and multitude of figures in her paintings engage with the genre of history painting, traditionally centered on clear narrative and message. However, the figures in Beninga’s work do not hold external or illustrative roles; they stand on their own, freed from the dictates of conventional, Western, masculine painting. These figures—as well as other representational elements—are devoted first and foremost to the creation of a lively compositional arena, influenced by the physical gestures of large-scale drawing.
Materially, the paintings are distilled to raw, exposed canvas, charcoal or chalk, and measured touches of oil paint. This material approach strips away the conventional method of fully covering the canvas, instead allowing visual testimony to the process between sketch and finished work.
